Masterplan

We have established our exciting proposals for Weavers Cross

Weavers Cross provides the opportunity to create a new destination in the heart of Belfast and enable the development of circa 140,000 sq.m across 4.83 hectares. Weavers Cross will also deliver the most important new public space in the city, Saltwater Square, and offer the potential to create new homes, a mix of retail and Grade A office space and new public realm.

Weavers Cross will be transformational for Belfast and Northern Ireland. This mixed-use, transport-led regeneration project will create a new city centre neighbourhood and also reconnect existing communities with the city core.

Weavers Cross will also create a fitting international gateway to Belfast. Translink’s Chief Executive, Chris Conway, said:

“Weavers Cross is one of the most exciting prospects to come to the market for some time. The unique site will be a catalyst, to positively re-imagine this area creating an impressive gateway for the city. By establishing a new, high quality mixed use development, providing modern economic infrastructure, it will afford opportunities for businesses to invest and grow.”

Secretary of State, Hilary Benn MP said, “I was so impressed by the scale, design and ambition of the new Grand Central Station which marks an important milestone for Northern Ireland. I congratulate Translink, the NI Executive and all those involved for developing such a great sustainable transport hub that will improve connectivity for the people of Northern Ireland.”

Enterprise developments

The flagship hourly Enterprise service operating from Grand Central Station represents a tremendous opportunity for growth with the potential to become the preferred transport mode and driver of economic development along the Belfast – Dublin corridor.

Approximately 3.3 million people live within a 40-mile commuting distance from the Belfast – Dublin railway corridor. This is projected to grow to over 4 million by 2030 and represents approximately half of the island’s population.

Translink and Iarnród Éireann have jointly produced an Enterprise Strategic Development Plan. Supported by the Northern Ireland Executive and the Irish Government this will bring further enhancement of cross-border rail services, including a reduction of journey times, a fleet replacement as well as proposed electrification of the entire corridor. Plans are currently underway to procure new fleet capable of covering the distance between the two capital cities in under two hours.

Enterprise on Craigmore Viaduct

These steps will be instrumental in strengthening economic links, supporting the Common Travel Area, promoting all-island tourism, and driving an all-island Net Zero agenda while supporting economic vitality and a better connected society for all.
