Belfast Transport Hub

Consultation Feedback

Prior to the submission of the full planning application for the new transport hub, Translink engaged in pre application public consultation.

The wide ranging consultation process involved an extensive range of stakeholders from many sectors including, landowners, community groups, local businesses, interest groups,  Translink passengers and interested individuals, along with extensive on-going community engagement. The process took place over a number of key stages.

  • Stage 1 – Autumn 2014/Winter 2015 – Summer 2015
  • Stage 2 – Autumn 2016 – January 2017
  • Stage 3 – February 2017 – June 2017

The proposals under consultation comprised detailed plans for the new Belfast Grand Central Station facility. The full planning application for the detailed transport hub proposals was submitted in June 2017 and planning permission was granted in March 2019.

Throughout the extensive consultation period, stakeholders expressed many opinions and views on the transport hub proposals and stakeholder responses led directly to amendments to the proposals which were submitted in the full planning application.

The Pre-Application Consultation Report identified 48 areas of feedback and the responses which stemmed from these common themes:

  • Pedestrian Access
  • Buses
  • Cycling
  • Traffic
  • Taxi provision
  • Neighbourhood Access
  • Belfast Transport Hub Building
  • Landscape and Public Realm
  • Environment and Heritage

For a full listing on all comments and responses download and view the Pre-Application Consultation Report and refer to pages 50 – 71.
